I owned two watches over a period of 30 years. Both of them were Seikos. The first one lasted only ten years as it was repeatedly dropped on a concrete floor. I had to take it off several times each day because of the work I did at the time. It doesn't matter how well a watch is made, they will only be able to take so many drops before they quit working.
The second watch I had was identical to this SGF523 model. I wore it for 20 years before it started falling apart. Once again, the reason for it's demise was my own carelessness.
I fully believe that either of the watches I owned would have lasted me a lifetime if I had taken better care of them.
I am now on my 3rd watch, and hopefully it will be the last one I have to buy. I purchased a Seiko Titanium (I can't remember the model number.) and it has not lost a second in the past several months that I have owned it.
The only thing that I don't like about my present watch is the stem button is a bit large compared to the other two that I owned. The only Seigo that I have looked at that doesn't have this large stem button is the "523". The larger button took a little getting used to.
OK, scratch the no more watches comment. I might buy me another "523" just for the heck of it.
My old "523" is hanging from a door opener on my desk. I just didn't have the heart to throw it away after it had been a part of my wrist for 20 years. :-)

The good news is that it was 20 years old! :-)
The old boy finally ticked it's last tick today. I had gotten it wet so many times that the stem was fairly rusty. When I went to set the time after purchasing a new battery, it just broke off from all the rust. And for some reason, it just didn't want to start running again after I installed the battery.
I didn't take care of my watch. I had to replace the crystal one time because I busted the other one from wearing it at work. The one that is on it now would also have to be replaced if the watch had not died.
It has been in the ocean, the swimming pool, the bath tub, and the shower. It was constantly getting wet from washing my hands and being out in the rain as well as just sweating from working. For the record: This watch was not made to get that wet.
The original crystal lasted 15 years before I finally gave up and bought a new one. That one only lasted five years before I busted it too.
All in all, considering the treatment that my watch received, I honestly can not think of anything I would rather have than another Seiko. Lucky for me, I found another one that looks exactly like my old one right down to the stainless steel case and band.
I might have gotten lucky with my old watch, but I don't think so. You see, the watch I had for ten years before this old boy was also a Seiko. I killed it by dropping it on a concrete floor several times a week for ten years. :-(
So, to put it all in a nutshell, I have only purchased two watches in the last 30 years and they have both been Seikos. I hope that the new one I am about to buy will be the last one I have to get. I think that I will take a little better care of this one seeing as how easy they break. :-)
I loved my Seiko and it is now hanging on the latch of one of my desk doors. I couldn't bring myself to throw it away after all these years. :-)
Seiko: As far as I am concerned, there is no other watch!
