5 out of 5 stars A watch you can wear every day for any occasion   June 4, 2007

Note this reviewer owns the Ceramica Multifunction, but the following comments and facts pertain to all Rado Ceramica models.

Initial impressions, fit and finish:
This is one the most distinctive but lesser known watches ever made, the ceramic links have a mirror reflective quality which doesn't change in varying light conditions. Extremely lightweight, the ceramic band also absorbs the body heat of the wearer and feels almost like a second skin.

The bracelet has a double locking titanium clasp that has never opened accidentally, links are extremely easy to adjust, this is the easiest watch I've ever resized, it doesn't even require tools. The bracelet can be adjusted by using something as simple as a pair of gym socks for a bench rest to hold another link pin steady while pushing out the existing anchors, then a simple pull of the extended anchor pin and you can start adding and removing links.

The face is just as attractive as the rest of the timepiece and is in no danger of being called anti glare, at any offset angle the face will reflect the surroundings just like the rest of the mirror links.

There are some drawbacks to this timepiece, contrary to the manufacturers claims the watch isn't "scratch proof", it is very hard but isn't impervious to blemishes, these will occur when the watch becomes pinched between your wrist and a desktop or keyboard, they have to be viewed at an angle to be noticed and Rado has always offered to replace my scratched links at no charge when submitted for warranty service by an authorized dealer.

The other drawback is this watch will prominently show fingerprints and other types of smudges that occur with just normal wear of a timepiece, if you enjoy wearing the watch or admiring it you will become annoyed and carry a jewelers cloth to erase the irksome marks.

Spotting a fake Rado Ceramica:
When buying a used Ceramica you should always deal with a trusted source if not an authorized dealer, remember always buy the seller before you buy the watch. Counterfeiters typically spend more time on the more prominent features of the watch and skimp on the small details such as buckles, crowns and casebacks. Rado's aren't the most popular and well known timepiece thus they aren't widely counterfeited, this is also a drawback since there isn't a large community of numerous published resources devoted to spotting fake Rado's like there is in the Rolex community.

Rado Ceramica bracelets use 100% unimpressive looking titanium stamped with the following:
RADO (Trademark Font as part of their logo)
Model Number (Arial Font)
TITANIUM (Arial Font / ALL UPPER CASE)

All of the information is stamped on the outside of the clasp and not the inner side facing the caseback.

The model number on the bracelet is for the bracelet itself and is at least five digits and may have a leading zero. The bracelet model number may not match the model number on the caseback and this is customary for a genuine piece.

Generally fake Ceramica's will have cheap stainless steel clasps for the buckle instead of titanium, a genunine titanium Rado buckle is non ferric so a small magnet shouldn't stick to a genuine Rado.

Rado Ceramica braclets are exquisitely baked and will have a quality plastic semi endo skeleton on the inner side that touches your wrist, this plastic will have a matte texture and feels more like a high quality resin, there should never be any excess edges you find in cheap molded plastics. If you take your finger and rub the inner plastic bracelet from case to clasp it should feel matte, but consistent without any visible or or tactile unevenness.

Counterfeit bracelet links are often made of cheap reflective metal instead of anything resembling ceramic, a quick test is to smudge a fingerprint and make 1-3 wipes with a jewelers cloth, if an oily streak remains on the bracelet then it may be fake, you can also use a magnet to test the bracelet since ceramic has no ferric qualities and ignores magnets. Also fake links completely wrap around without the plastic endoskeleton

Genuine casebacks are brushed stainless steel with the serial number laser printed in prominent black, the steel is single surfaced without engraving, stampings, or reliefs. The case back should read in the following order from top to bottom inside of a laser printed rectangle with rounded corners:
/-------------------------\
RADO(R) (Trademark Font as part of their logo)
DiaStar (the D & S are capitalized but still one word)

SWISS
the.model.number (with periods, not hyphens and no spaces)

HIGH-TECH
CERAMICS

SCRATCHPROOF
WATERSEALED
\-------------------------/

(unique S/N)

The serial number should be outside of the laser rectangle, the caseback cover plate will have semi rounded / semi beveled corners attached with four flush screws. Note the capitalization of the preceding example, it is accurate and should be reflected on all genuine Ceramicas.

Fake casebacks will often be etched or poorly engraved without flushed screws and a S/N that is indiscernible from the rest of the markings.

Genuine Ceramica crowns are delicately knurled, this is an expensive detail that counterfeiters will overlook most often with just a smooth knob crown that is difficult to pull.

Multifunction models use the crown turned in either direction to access the features, the amount of travel is noticeable and a fake Multifunction crown will be extremely sensitive. Note, I've only seen one fake multifunction , they aren't often faked since counterfeiters feel satisfied with fake Jubile's.

Long term ownership tips
These watches have decent resale value, nothing less than you'd expect from a member of the Swatch Group, a word to the wise, have the battery changed by a competent jeweler familiar with exquisite timepieces, Rado watches are extremely cramped inside and have a reputation for being hard to open, the uninitiated often become frustrated and end up dropping the entire mechanism out of the case and sometimes damaging the movement and or improperly replacing the moisture seal of the caseback, this leads to either condensation or water damage.

What you'll discover is this watch is perfect for that important job interview or casual enough with cutoff's on a July Sunday, bound to illicit compliments and questions this watch will never go out of style and distinguish you as anther happy Rado owner.
